Early life
Born on August 14, 1964, in South Africa, Guy Walter is a self-taught artist and ceramics teacher renowned for his expertise in hollow building ceramic sculpture. As the son of Ken Walter, a Springbok cricketer, and Caroline Walter, Guy’s artistic journey began at an early age.
At just four years old, he would “kidnap” soap from the bathroom to carve intricate animal sculptures, sparking a lifelong passion for creativity that diverged from his father’s sporting legacy. Recognizing his artistic inclinations, his mother encouraged his talent by providing art materials for birthdays, while Guy’s defiance of nap time in preschool led to secret clay and paint sessions.
His talent shone in school, where he won first prize in sculpture during the 7th grade, competing against peers from other schools. Traditional education proved challenging, leading him to the Johannesburg National School of Arts, where he graduated with an accolade in sculpture. After a year studying commercial art and a stint in the army’s heraldic studio designing insignias, he spent a year at the Johannesburg Art Foundation.
In 1987, Guy created sculptural masks and puppetry for Nu-Art Studios, transitioning in 1988 to Cape Town, where he worked as a window dresser. By 1989, he fully embraced his artistic path, joining the Barbara Jackson Studio for three years and exhibiting his work in galleries. In 1991, he began working independently and, in 1994, opened his ceramics school, where he continues to teach and create stunning sculptures for exhibitions.
